A future with a history of commitment
Talecris Biotherapeutics is a new company proud to inherit a legacy of more than 60 years of providing lifesaving and life-enhancing plasma-derived therapeutic proteins. Through the assets of Bayer Biological Products’ plasma business, Talecris’ heritage of patient care innovations in therapeutic proteins dates back to the blood-derived products Cutter Laboratories began to produce in the early 1940s. In 1942, Cutter Laboratories was one of the first manufacturers to use the revolutionary new procedures of plasma fractionation for the large-scale production of albumin. Cutter and its successor companies, including Miles Laboratories and Bayer, were recognized in the industry as producers of innovative products, starting with the development of albumin and continuing with other products for immune deficiencies, genetic lung disease, hemophilia, and passive immunity.
Talecris Biotherapeutics acquired the contributed assets of the worldwide plasma business of Bayer Biological Products and became operational April 1, 2005. All plasma-based products - including Gamunex - related facilities, and employees are now functioning under the name Talecris Biotherapeutics. Talecris, having inherited this solid foundation of unparalleled expertise and experience, is now uniquely positioned to create a new standard of excellence in the field of biotherapeutics.
Today, Talecris scientists continue their commitment to the needs of both patients and caregivers through the identification and development of novel therapeutics derived from plasma. However, the use of plasma products, as with many other therapies, is not without potential risk. Because plasma donors can carry infections (often unknowingly), human plasma may contain pathogenic agents capable of transmitting hepatitis and other diseases. Thanks to the significant advances in donor screening, testing procedures, and virus removal and inactivation methods made by Talecris, today's plasma-derived products are safer than ever.
Talecris utilizes scientifically advanced virus removal and inactivation technologies to manufacture products from plasma. We lead the industry in research into, and setting standards for, pathogen safety. Our contributions in these areas reflect our commitment of resources and expertise to plasma safety.
Talecris is also committed to sharing resources and expertise to enhance patient care, scientific advancements and public policy. We communicate widely about the known benefits and risks of plasma products in order to address current and future challenges to the supply of safe and effective plasma-derived therapies.
The manufacture of safe plasma products requires nothing less than scientific diligence and constant vigilance. Talecris instills both at every point in the lengthy and complex process required to produce safe and effective plasma-derived therapies-from plasma donor to patient.
