Patient Matt Seals, and his father Quentin, Knoxville, Tennessee
Converting to Gamunex®
My son Matt has X-Linked Primary Immune (PI) deficiency disease. He was diagnosed at 2 years old. Ever since his diagnosis, I decided to become actively involved with the Immune Deficiency Foundation's (IDF) efforts to raise awareness and education among newly diagnosed patients, and the general public.
Every month, Matt and I hop in the truck and take a trip to Children's Hospital over in Knoxville. At the beginning of 2004, Matt switched from Gamimune® N to Gamunex®, the manufacturer's new IGIV product. Honestly, Matt's transition has been seamless. We are real happy with the new product.
Quentin Seals: On Attending The IDF Volunteer Conference
The best part of the whole conference was visiting the Gamunex® IGIV production plant in Clayton, N.C. I work in nuclear facilities, and I never knew the same level of technology, precision and safety is used to produce the therapy that lets Matt "live large," without restrictions. It just never occurred to me how intricate producing this stuff is! I was especially interested in the complex safety process. It's really important for physicians to know that the caprylate viral inactivation process really improves the final product.
The employees at the Gamunex® production plant really went out of their way to treat us like family. But, there is still a lot of work to be done, and the Gamunex® team let us, the IDF volunteers, know they are working hard to address our community's concerns. Every patient is different. Some people experience side effects on certain brands of therapy, yet they must continue to receive treatment with that product because their insurance coverage is based on price, not tolerability. The community has to work together to address these issues.
Like I mentioned earlier, because of Gamunex®, Matt is living proof that people can "live large" without restrictions because of IGIV products. My goal with Matt's transition is to make sure he keeps living a healthy, active lifestyle. So far, he has done just that. In fact, right after the conference I watched him drive-in 11 runs and throw a guy out at home plate from the outfield. This would not be possible without advanced IGIV therapies such as Gamunex®.
